There are so many different requests and demands on a pub each year to support different individual charities, we decided in our first year that whatever we did needed to be fully supported in order that we gave a substantial amount of money to our nominated charity, rather than have the normal £15.00 thank you letter’ on the bar.
We therefore decided to dedicate each year to a different charity of our choice and hopefully raise a substantial amount of funds in order to make a difference.
We don’t want our money sucked up into a huge charity where we have no idea where the money is going – we therefore chose our charities carefully.
In our 1st year we gave £1,750 to our local primary school for play/learn and computer equipment.
In our 2nd year we gave £2,535 to The Braunston Home in Sudan. A Hope and Homes project that re-houses refuges children from the war in Sudan, a project that is closely linked with our village, hence the name ‘Braunston Home’.
Our 3rd year we raise £1,200 for our local Air Ambulance service.
And in our 4th year we raised £3,238 for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a wonderful charity that takes abled and dis-abled people sailing tall ships together, buddying them together to teach each other skills. This was 2005, the year of the Nelson anniversary and we helped raise the total by an eight man team climbing the tall ship mast of ‘The Lord Nelson’ – never, ever again!!!!!
2006, our 5th year we raised £700 for our local primary school. The money was raised for their Gardening Club, helping to teach the children planting, nurturing, harvesting and then cooking with their own healthy home-grown produce. Money so far has been spent on garden tools, a wheelbarrow and a storage shed. The remainder of the funds are currently being allocated and we will update you on their progress.
May we take this opportunity to thank all of you who have kindly donated tools which were all gratefully received by the school. Thank you.
2007, our 6th year we raised £775 for Jetty Field. Following on from a successful year of fundraising in 2006 for the Braunston Primary School’s Gardening Club, where the local children were introduced to the world of gardening, the Admiral Nelson decided to support Jetty Field in Braunston.
Jetty Field is a wonderful piece of land in the middle of Braunston that was gifted to the parish council in order to provide a green, open space for the peaceful recreation and enjoyment of the local community. The area is being preserved as a nature conservation area and will be used to create a safe and accessible area for residents and visitors to Braunston, along with continuing to promote the educational value of the area to people of all ages.
It is a fantastic bit of land that will never be built on and the residents of Braunston are very lucky to have the beautiful open space.
We are very pleased to confirm that at the end of 2007, the staff and customers at The Admiral Nelson, raised £775 for Jetty Field, a very worthwhile project for Braunston.
And so to 2008 – to be announced shortly ……
